The Glamour Dragon

Overview:

In this community encounter by Dylan Goss of Stuffed Rock Studio, your party must fight a crystal dragon. This dragon has been harassing a kingdom and possess a special breath weapon that slowly turns the PCs into crystal and is able to attack their minds. The dragon has literally frozen trade between cities and the cities the PCs represent depend on the trade route for survival. The PCs have to defeat the dragon before they succumb to a crystal state.

Initial Description:

As you make your way through the crystalline forest, you find the lord of this domain, a towering dragon, glimmering in the sunlight. Colors flow into each other, shimmering as they shift and reflect off of the mockery of lush forest around him, creating a brilliant portend of death. But as it raises a single talon, and a foreboding smirk graces this visage of gossamer, you realize that these colors and lights are very much alive.

Enemies:

Objectives:

Main: Slay the dragon.

Map:

Overview:

The map is fairly empty apart from trees. PCs can take some refuge from the breath weapon by hiding behind a tree, but should all PCs hide on the same side then the dragon will be able to move and get them in one go.

Special Mechanics

Crystalized Condition: Crystalized occurs in stages. If a character already has the Crystalized condition, and they contract it again, they go up a stage. All stages are cleared if the character does something to remove conditions (eg, Lesser Restoration, Dispel Magic).

  • Stage 1: The character takes 1d4 piercing damage if they double move, and cannot travel at a fast pace.

  • Stage 2: Additionally take 1d4 piercing damage if they make a dexterity saving throw.

  • Stage 3: Disadvantage on skills using dexterity.

  • Stage 4: Movement speed halved.

  • Stage 5: Disadvantage on unarmed and weapon attacks.

  • Stage 6: Speed becomes 0.

  • Stage 7: Incapacitated.

  • Stage 8: Dead.

Getting Crystalized: Getting Crystalized happens both in the fight and along the way to finding the Dragon’s Breath attack. When traveling through the crystalized forest have the party make the following checks on a long rest:

  • DC13 Con save if you've been breathing unfiltered air in the crystal zone

  • DC13 Con save if you've been injured in the crystal zone

  • DC13 Con save at disadvantage if both of these are true

Note: if this seems harsh, it's important to note that these mechanics were created with the knowledge that the party had the means to figure them out. One PC had a magic item that informed him (of its own accord) if it was surrounded by powerful magic. They were able to figure out the mechanics early on, and covering your nose and mouth with a cloth counts as filtering.

Dragon of the Mind: All of the dragon's attacks (even bite and claw attacks) are Psychic damage. As a result, the numbers are a bit lower than your average adult dragon, to account for the fact that Psychic resistance is harder to come by. Even bear totem barbarians don't have Psychic resistance.

Extras:

How We Used it - The campaign saw the players starting as members of an adventurer's guild in a very desperate country. The country hadn't seen trade in months, and was slowly suffocating as a result. No foreign merchants came, no local merchants who left came back. Scouts disappeared, messenger birds never returned. The guild has already lost adventurers to this cause, but the other option is a slow death. The weight of this country's hopes and dreams rests squarely on the party's shoulders.

As the party travels north, they eventually come upon partially crystalized trees. Further in, things eventually become fully crystalized. Messenger birds, merchants, horses, carts, and other guild members can all be found. The area is also full of hostile fae. It will take a week's journey to get through this area, during which time no food or water can be gathered as it's all become crystal.
